Abstract

Abstract This chapter provides a comprehensive description and analysis of the largely traditional vocabulary of Irish English, North and South. It deals with the full range of lexical creations, from original coinages, borrowings/apports, compounds and derivations to more current types word formations, such as shortenings, clippings, blends, reduplication, acronyms, and echoic/onomatopoeic words. At the same time, it is concerned with issues of lexical semantics. The primary data underlying the chapter comes from existing dictionaries of both Northern and Southern Irish English dealing with the lexis of both English and Scots provenance along with the many instances of continuations of Irish words in English which have resulted from the historical language shift. The chapter addresses the issue of regionality of lexical items and meanings and also shows the different effects which the use of local dialect words can have in literary texts.
