Indigenous Archaeology Revisited

Abstract

Abstract This chapter focuses on the key concepts and relevance of Indigenous Archaeology. The definition of Indigenous Archaeology changed over time, before ultimately settling on the definition of archaeology with, for, and by Indigenous peoples. Some people view Indigenous Archaeology as a contribution to furthering tribal perspectives on the way the Indigenous past is represented within Archaeology and the way it might be beneficial to Indigenous Identity. The chapter then looks into the interplay of Indigenous Archaeology with repatriation and decolonization, respectively. It considers the concepts of outsider involvement in archaeology as an alternative approach while referencing community-based participatory research.
