Abstract

Abstract In this chapter, we provide an overview of the “state of the field” with respect to the topic of violence risk. The chapter is divided into four sections. In the first section, we define and discuss the concept of violence risk and discuss the importance of violence risk assessment and management in psychology and law. In the second section, we summarize research on violence risk, including both applied and experimental research. In the third section, we consider legal views and treatment of violence risk, focusing primarily (but not exclusively) on statutory and case law from the United States. Finally, in the fourth section, we make recommendations for research, practice, and public policy concerning violence risk.
