Abstract

Abstract This chapter provides an overview of the data from the National Core Indicators (NCI) In-Person Survey (IPS) regarding people who need support for self-injurious behavior (SIB). It primarily focuses on the characteristics of people who require support for SIB who receive services from state intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) systems and the community. SIB poses challenges when it comes to planning for and supporting a person to live and participate in their community. Thus, supporting people who require support for SIB entails a significant investment of staff and financial resources. The chapter states that the NCI captured the reported need for SIB-related supports, but the provisions and quality of those supports remain unknown.
