Abstract

Abstract The regulation of Big Tech is a matter of intense global concern. Multiplicity is a notable element of the regulatory response. Numerous, parallel efforts have emerged within a number of jurisdictions to expand the enforcement of existing laws and to create new ex ante regulatory mechanisms. The pursuit of solutions to perceived problems arising from the extraordinary growth of Big Tech enterprises confronts economic regulators with unprecedented challenges as they seek to understand highly dynamic commercial sectors and integrate learning from a variety of policy domains and professional disciplines. This chapter considers the contributions that academic research institutions—“academic hubs”—can play in devising sound regulatory strategies and facilitating adoption, within and across jurisdictions, of superior norms regarding the substance and process of regulatory oversight.
