Abstract
This section of the Handbook is concerned with music in the lives of young children, who are considered to be more “neurodiverse” in their behavior and development. Such children have often been labeled as having some form of “special need” in an educational sense. Examples of particular “needs” in this section’s contents relate to visual impairment, hearing loss, and autism. However, in terms of musical behavior and development, “neurodiverse” children can exhibit a rich range and depth of musical competency, implying that any such “special need” is not a barrier to musical engagement and that music may bring wider benefits to young children’s development.
