Abstract

Abstract This chapter explores the impact of visual impairment on musical development in early childhood. Evidence is gathered from research that sought to explore the musical development of children who are blind or partially sighted and musical engagement is gauged using the Sounds of Intent in the Early Years framework. We suggest that children who are severely visually impaired represent an exceptional cohort of the population as a whole; while the full range of musical ability is present, a relatively high percentage display exceptional levels of musical development beyond that of their sighted peers. We suggest that music can play an important role in the lives of young children who are blind or partially sighted, potentially having a positive impact on wider development and wellbeing.
