Abstract
Abstract
This chapter presents aspects of the community of musical practice formed by the children involved in the maracatu de baque virado tradition, an Afro-Brazilian musical culture and tradition situated in the northeastern city of Recife, capital of Pernambuco state. Drawing on extensive ethnographic fieldwork, the chapter intends to (1) present an overview of maracatu de baque virado; (2) discuss children’s community of musical practices within this community music setting; and (3) examine enculturation as a social soundscape, oficinas as nonformal education, and transmission as children’s pedagogical processes. Lastly, this chapter argues the importance of welcoming children in a tradition rooted in resistance and constant movement while carrying centuries’ worth of meanings, as children gain a sense of musical and cultural ownership that will lead to a sustainable future, transforming this community of musical practice as a community of musical resistance.
