Individual Differences in Working and Long-Term Memory

Abstract

Abstract There are clear and important individual differences in memory. This chapter provides a review of evidence for individual differences in working and long-term memory. Individual differences studies examining potential sources of variation in working and long-term memory and their relations to other cognitive constructs are discussed. Furthermore, interactions between working and long-term memory are discussed, suggesting that these two constructs interact during encoding and retrieval. Overall, there are robust and important individual differences in both working and long-term memory, and it is suggested that future research is needed to better clarify the similarities and differences between these two forms of memory.
