Abstract

Abstract Self-monitoring is a personality trait that reflects the extent to which an individual is receptive to interpersonal and social cues, observes own behaviors in relation to others in social situations, and regulates self-presentation accordingly. This chapter aims to contribute to organizational studies by offering novel and measurable propositions to guide new research that will contribute to our understanding of self-monitoring effects in two key areas—remote work and leadership diversity—which gained traction with the Covid-19 pandemic. The chapter also offers readers a whistle stop review of what we know and what we need to know on self-monitoring effects beyond these two key areas. The chapter proposes that self-monitoring can be studied both as a personality trait and an acquirable skill set, which explain differential work experiences and outcomes in organizational contexts.
