Abstract

Abstract Candidate selection is one of the most important tasks performed by political parties in a democracy, and all the more so in closed-list proportional representation (CLPR) systems such as the one in Portugal. The choice of which individual politicians are included in the party lists and their chances of being elected rests in the hands of parties, shaping the make-up of parliament and of democratic representation. This chapter analyses the dynamics of candidate selection in Portugal, highlighting the parties’ combination of exclusive and centralized selection rules with more inclusive practices. Portugal is profiled as a crucial case that defies the expectations of centralized and exclusive selectorates with CLPR systems.
