EEG Frequency Development Across Infancy and Childhood

Abstract

AbstractIn the developmental neurophysiology literature there is no standardization of EEG rhythms as found in adolescent and adult EEG work. As a result, EEG researchers have used multiple techniques to determine appropriate frequency band definitions for infants and children. This chapter provides an overview of the ontogeny of multiple EEG rhythms, including theta, beta, and gamma activity. Our primary focus is on infant and child alpha activity and central mu rhythm, as these have received the most attention in the developmental literature. We describe growth associated with these components and how they are related to critical action-perception, cognitive, and affective processes in early development.
