Abstract
An argument for the nonreducibility of thermodynamics to statistical mechanics is given and a nonreducible ontology for entropy, health, and goodness is suggested. The argument is based on the modal fact that the putative reduction makes it impossible to distinguish between what is impossible and what does not exist, as well as making the mortality of the human body contingent.
