Abstract
The issue of forest fires has become a high concern for many parties. The recurrent disasters of forest fires due to the degradation of peatlands functions require responsive leadership. Therefore, this article examines the leadership of the Bupati/ Regional Head of Tanjung Jabung Timur Regency, Romi Hariyanto, in protecting peatlands. We found that peatlands protection is not easy to do by the local governments. Reflecting on the Tanjung Jabung Timur Regency, Bupati is facing the problem of limited budget capacity and disharmony among programs. However, the weakness was covered by his leadership which was firm and consistent in enforcing the rules. In the end, disaster policy management requires strategic and adaptive leadership.
