Abstract
Failure of tubing boilers in power plants can be caused by several things including creep, corrosion, erosion, and overheating. In this study, an analysis of waterwall boiler failure is presented. Visual examination, dimension measurements, chemical analysis, microstructural tests, hardness test, and corrosion tests were carried out to determine the mechanism and causes of failure of waterwall tubing. From the sample, it can be observed that the tubing is experiencing local thinning due to corrosion with the oxides resulting from the corrosion sticking to the corroded tube surface. There is no difference microstructure between the area that is experiencing thinning and that not, namely ferrite and pearlite. Further observations with SEM EDS showed the presence of salt deposits with a thick chemical composition of Ca, and Na. The quality of the boiler seal water with a position that is very close to the leak point of the tube is the cause of the deposit. Keywords: seal water, waterwall tube, corrosion, salt deposits.
