Abstract
First MTF (metatarsophalangeal) arthrodesis is a frequent procedure for hallux rigidus (first MTF arthrosis) or hallux valgus (bunion) in the presence of arthrosis. We present the clinical benefits and foot biomechanics after first MTF arthrodesis for revision hallux valgus surgery. For this purpose we included patients which had previous hallux valgus surgery and MTF arthrodesis for correction of recurrent deformity and pain. We measured static and dynamic pressures (ground reaction forces - GRF) using pedobarographic and gait measurements over long term follow-up. We found good and functional gait patterns and GRF distributions which showed somewhat normal persistent plantar pressures at 2 years after first MTF arthrodesis. In cases of infection this procedure proved also to be a cure for the local sepsis. The procedure allows good kinematics and mobility even in young patients and compensatory increased mobility of the interphalangeal joint and proximal first ray were observed.
