Property Comparation of Ti-Based and Cr-Based PVD Nitride Coatings

Abstract

In this paper, the properties of TiN, AlTiN, CrN and CrAlN coatings were studied and compared, include physical and mechanical properties and micro morphology. The result showed with addition of Al, ternary AlTiN and CrAlN coatings showed dense structure and high hardness compared with TiN and CrN coatings. Adhesion strength of the Cr-based coatings was obviously higher than Ti-based coatings, but the roughness of Cr-based coatings was less than Ti-based coatings. Concerning microstructures of the coating, better ductile and dense are the remarkable character of the AlTiN and CrAlN coatings because of the disappearation of the “drop-lets” and columnar crystals.
