Abstract
A low temperature 166Er-Mössbauer spectroscopy investigation of ErNiAl4 reveals that the Er3+ ion’s ground state Kramers doublet has ¦Jz¦ just 8% less than the fully-stretched value of J = 15/2. The persistence of a magnetically-split spectrum to well above TN = 5.8 K is consistent with Orbach type paramagnetic relaxation that proceeds via the third excited crystal field level.
