El sistema de riego del azud de Román (Jumilla, Murcia): Relectura histórica de un paisaje agrario o la deconstrucción de un tópico desde la arqueología, la tecnología y el territorio

Abstract

The Román Dam hydraulic system is a modern historical structure located at Rambla de la Raja (Jumilla, Murcia) to take advantage of flood waters. Probably built in the 18th century, it was expanded and continued to function until the second half of the 20th century, when it fell into disuse. The system was traditionally considered to be from Roman times and supposedly linked to the nearby and ancient settlements of La Alberca and Casa de los Cobos. However, evidence from this study leads us to rule out this cultural affiliation. Archaeological analysis of the standing walls of the hydraulic system reveals a complex with technological features that are specific to modern and contemporary eras. The study provides enough data to warrant revision of the chronology. The new dating is supported by written documentation and is coherent with the sequencing of elements in the surrounding historical landscape.
