OBJECTION AND ANSWERS TO OCCASIONALISM: A DIALECTIC APPROACH

Author:

AKAR Metin

Abstract

Occasionalism claims that God's acts should not be limited, based on the assertion that God has infinite will and power. According to occasionalism, God is the only true cause of all cause-effect relations in the universe by constantly interfering with the universe with his will and power. All the perpetrators we observe regarding the cause-effect relationship are the causes of God's intervention. In this article, we will first describe the basic claims of occasionalism with a descriptive narrative. Then, we will present the objections and answers made dialectically. The article claims that occasionalism has internal consistency, but it does not respond to the objections made other than this internal consistency. Finally, within the scope of contemporary mind philosophy, the article will reveal that occasionalism excludes scientific studies of the nature of the soul and is in a mysterious position.
