BACKGROUND
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a condition that affects the insulin sensitive receptor’s ability to respond to insulin. It is preceded by prediabetes, which is characterized by moderate insulin resistance. Several complications that are associated with T2DM have been shown to begin during prediabetes, such as Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. In this study, we investigate the changes in liver function biomarkers in prediabetics, within South Africa.
OBJECTIVE
To determine the prevalence of NAFLD in South Africa.
To determine the changes in biomarkers associated with NAFLD in the prediabetic state.
To determine the prevalence of the co-existence of prediabetes and NAFLD.
METHODS
This systemic review protocol has been prepared following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Protocols 2015 guidelines.
RESULTS
The outcomes of the review will provide more insight on the magnitude of the co-existent relationship between prediabetes and NAFLD in South Africa
CONCLUSIONS
There is a lack of studies that indicate the overall prevalence of NAFLD and prediabetes in South Africa. In this review, we will review the prevalence of prediabetes associated NAFLD in South Africa.
