Abstract

BACKGROUND

The sexual, reproductive and mental health needs among adolescents and young people living with Spina bifida and Hydrocephalus disability is still poorly understood. Additionally, it remains unknown what impact these disabilities have on the siblings and caregiver’s mental health and wellbeing in a resource constrained setting like Uganda.

OBJECTIVE

To explore and understand the sexual, reproductive and mental health needs among adolescents and young people with Spina bifida and Hydrocephalus disability in Uganda.

METHODS

This is a cross-sectional study involving collection of qualitative data. We will conduct semi-structured interviews with young people with Spina bifida and Hydrocephalus disability; siblings and parents/ caregivers who care and support them. We will use purposive sampling and the criterion of theoretical saturation. The interviews will be audio recorded for later transcription. Data will be manually coded and later analysed through content-thematic analysis approach and discussed in light of the socio-ecological model framework, with the production of categories that answer the proposed research questions.
