In this article, we will provide a rationale for an Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) approach to loneliness among older adults, drawing upon theories from the literature on adult development and aging, emotion regulation, and loneliness. We will provide a brief description of the ACT model of treatment and review the literature on investigations of ACT-related processes among older adults. Finally, important adaptations that need to be considered when using ACT with older adults will be discussed along with recommendations for future research regarding this approach to addressing loneliness among older adults.
