Sustainable Reuse of Food Waste in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for Biocomposite Reinforcement

Abstract

This study explores the innovative use of biocomposites as a sustainable solution to waste proliferation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the largest sub-Saharan African country by area. The DRC faces significant environmental challenges due to the high prevalence of organic waste (48% of total waste) and plastic waste (26%). Our research addresses critical waste management issues, contributing to economic growth and public health improvements by recycling and reusing these materials. This study is unique in its focus on using inedible food waste as reinforcement in biocomposites, highlighting the untapped potential for sustainable waste management and circular economy practices in the DRC. Optimal performance of biocomposites requires extensive research into the thermogravimetric behavior of materials and their environmental interactions. Techniques such as Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) are essential for understanding the chemical properties and enhancing the interface between biocomposite components. The recyclability of biocomposites adds another layer of sustainability, allowing materials to be reprocessed for various applications. Our study also emphasizes the importance of public participation and the need for strategic international partnerships with organizations like the World Bank, UNDP, UNEP, and AfDB to enhance waste management capacity and infrastructure. By leveraging these innovative approaches and securing goodwill from governing bodies, the DRC can move towards a greener and more sustainable future, contributing to environmental quality, economic prosperity, and social equity.
