Abstract
Abstract
The corrosion behavior of alloy 5052 and 99.99% aluminum in 3% NaCl is compared with that in natural and synthetic sea waters at pH 7.2 and 8.2. The differences in behavior observed with variations in pH, electrolyte, or temperature are reconciled in terms of the sea water carbonic acid system. It is suggested that a similar mechanism accounts for the variability of stored or recirculated sea water.
