Abstract
AbstractA provisional cladistic analysis of the species groups ofGonatocerusNees is presented, based on 24 characters. Six species groups are defined, but only the four Nearctic ones are described. The species groups proposed are theater, deficiens, litoralis, membraciphagus, straeleni, andsulphuripesgroups. Theatergroup is divided into themorrilli,ater(s.s.), andbucculentussubgroups. Keys are provided to distinguish the species groups, and females of thesulphuripes- andater-group species. Twenty-four species are recognized in thesulphuripesandatergroups for America north of Mexico. Eight species are recognized in thesulphuripesgroup, of whichcalifornicus, koebelei, maga, mexicanus, rivalis, andutahensisare redescribed. Two species, floridensisandlissonotus, are described as new. One new synonymy is proposed:titillatusis considered a junior synonym ofutahensis. Sixteen species are recognized in theatergroup, of whichashmeadi, capitatus, dolichocerus, fasciatus, latipennis, morrilli, novifasciatus, ovicenatus, andtriguttatusare redescribed. Seven species, bucculentus, enicmophilus, flagellatus, impar, incomptus, inexpectatus, andinflatiscapus, are described as new. Two new synonymies are proposed:maximusis considered a junior synonym oflatipennis, andmarilandicusa junior synonym ofdolichocerus. Lectotypes are designated forashmeadi, capitatus, koebelei, mexicanus, morrilli, ovicenatus, triguttatus, andutahensis.
