Abstract
In present study, eight compounds were isolated from the Aloe vera L. var. chinensis Haw. Berg.
grown in Vietnam from the methanolic extract. The isolated compounds were elucidated for their
structures on the basis of NMR spectroscopic data and found to aloe emodin, emodin, 2-hydroxy-1-
methoxy-anthraquinone, 1,6-dihydroxy-2-methylanthraquinone, kaempferol 3-O-α-Larabinofuranoside,
kaempferol 3-O-gentibioside, β-amyrin and ursolic acid. Antibacterial activity of
Aloe vera gel extract showed strong effects on Gram-positive bacteria than Gram-negative stains,
except Escherichia coli. At low concentration 50 μg/mL, the crude extract did not showed the inhibition.
Four of the five Gram-positive bacteria were inhibited at 100 μg/mL of methanol extract. At 400
μg/mL, the maximum zone of inhibition was observed against Bacilluss pumilus (17 mm), Escherichia
coli (15 mm), Sarcina lurtea (13 mm) and Vibrio cholera (12 mm).
