In this Collinson argues that religious history, as opposed to ecclesiastical history, is witnessing a resurgence and growth of interest exemplified by the fact that the illustrated Oxford history of the subject outsells its stablemates. Collinson is right to suggest that this should be the occasion for a more careful scrutiny of religious history's trajectory, a purpose to which this present article hopes to contribute.
