Reflections on glare

Abstract

This paper describes the philosophy and research leading up to the recent publication of the CIE-report No 146 ‘CIE equations for Disability Glare’. It extends, however, to a consideration of discomfort glare and dazzling glare. It starts with a critical discussion of glare terminology, resulting in suggestions for more accurate wording, followed by a review of research on disability glare, including ocular causes of entoptic scatter, the Stiles-Holladay equation, and age dependence. This section ends with the present state of the art as described in the CIE report and concretized in three generalizations of the Stiles-Holladay equation. Finally, suggestions are made for a more structured research on discomfort and dazzling glare.
