Abstract
The invention discussed herein is a wideband rectangular microstrip patch antenna with customizable radiation patterns. Aside from the patch's resonant length, the antenna includes four symmetrically inverted U-slots and two coaxial probes. The antenna works in sum and difference modes in accordance with TM<sub>01</sub> and TM<sub>02</sub> modes, correspondingly. The microstrip patch antenna with U-slots offers a 68% impedance bandwidth, as well as stable polarization and symmetrical radiation patterns. The substrate thickness was very small, on the order of 0.02 d, where d is the wavelength of the dielectric medium at 3 GHz. To obtain broad bandwidth and symmetric radiation patterns, parameters are analyzed. The achieved null difference in difference mode is substantially below -30 db, making the suggested antenna ideal for monopulse radar applications. The antenna was found to be efficient in the frequency range 1.98-4.5 GHz. The antenna was designed using ANSYS HFSS software.
