Spectroelectrochemical Study of the Hybrid between Vanadium Oxide and Carboxybenzylviologen for Application in Electrochromic Electrodes

Abstract

In this work, we describe the synthesis of a new organic-inorganic hybrid material, which is composed by 1,1'-bis(4-carboxybenzyl)-4,4'-bipyridine (carboxybenzylviologen) bromide and vanadium pentoxide xerogel for application in electrochromic electrodes. The presence of the viologen resulted in a stabilization of the electrochemical response of vanadium pentoxide xerogel and improvement in spectroelectrochemical properties. The hybrid presented good reversibility and cyclability during 100 cycles, electrochromic efficiency was 16 cm²C-¹, 92.7 % (410 nm) transmittance variation and 59.1 % color retention after 100 cycles of color changing.
