Abstract
In this work we investigate the performance of Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells based on commercial nanostructured zinc oxide combined with imidazolium-based room temperature ionic liquid electrolytes. We have looked at the influence of the iodide concentration and the effect of common additives such as lithium ions and tert-butylpiridine. The crucial role of the ionic transport and recombination losses are thoroughly studied by impedance spectroscopy. A maximum photoconversion efficiency of 3.4% at 1 sun illumination has been obtained for cells of 0.64 cm2 active area with the best performing compositions and N719 dye as sensitizer. Diffusion limitations due to slow transport processes are analyzed and discussed. An indoline derivative named D149 is also used as sensitizer and its performance with solvent free electrolyte is analyzed
