The Long Journey in Perpendicular Magnetic Recording -From the Beginning to the Future

Abstract

Perpendicular magnetic recording finally became commercialized as hard disk drives about 30 years after the authors began their research into perpendicular magnetic recording. In this paper, their past and present works are introduced for future development of perpendicular magnetic recording. Through this paper, the author offers a basic philosophy retained during the long journey of the research and development in perpendicular magnetic recording.
