Abstract
Poly-paraphenylene films have been electrochemically synthesized using two medium. The first route employed concentrated sulfuric acid and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) as the surfactant, while the second route involved room temperature ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate (EMITF) and SDS, using benzene as the monomer unit in both the routes. The films are amorphous in nature as revealed by XRD. FT-IR study has elucidated the presence of para linkage in the films. The sulfuric acid medium derived films exhibit high transmission (~ 77 %) compared to the ionic liquid derived films (~ 47 %) at 550 nm. The optical direct and indirect bandgaps of the films derived from acidic medium were found to be 3.85 and 3.5 eV, respectively. The films have exhibited photoluminescence emission peaks at 355 nm and an additional peak also appears at 406, 437, 453 and 470 nm. Furthermore, these films have exhibited electrochromism and the ionic liquid derived film (453 cm2C-1) shows higher coloration efficiency value, which confirms its superior electrochromic performance in comparison to the sulfuric acid derived film
