Abstract
The present contribution tries to give a brief survey on state of the art modeling of water electrolyzers based on proton exchange membranes (PEM). First attempts to describe their operating behavior by means of mechanistic models have been carried out in the early 1990ies by Millet (e.g. [Millet, Electrochimica Acta 36 (1991), p. 263] and Goldberg et al. [Goldberg et al., Journal of Applied Electrochemistry 22 (1992), p. 1147]). Since then a few dozens of further papers dealing with this subject have been published, most of them in the last decade. Those papers have been carefully analyzed and are discussed with regard to the considered phenomena in each of the functional layers of the electrolyzer.
