Abstract
New polymorph modification of LiFeTiO4 with the calcium ferrite structure was prepared by low temperature ion exchange. This compound can be considered as a model system for multiple electron cycling per Fe atom, i.e. Fe2+ (Li1+xFeTiO4) / Fe4+ (Li1-xFeTiO4). The crystal structure of LiFeTiO4 was determined using Rietveld refinement (Pnma, a = 8.9498(6) Aå, b = 2.9528(6) Aå, c = 10.7457(8) Aå). LiFeTiO4 in the calcium ferrite type structure was found to be thermodynamically unstable, transforming to the known spinel LiFeTiO4 polymorph at higher temperatures.
