Abstract
The efficacy of polymers (paints) enriched with microencapsulated insecticides against Aedes albopictus was evaluated under laboratory conditions using the forced contact technique (WHO). Three types of paints were evaluated: pyrethroids (PY), organophosphates (OP) and pyriproxyfen (PPF). These paints were applied on two types of surfaces and at two concentrations. Adult nulliparous females without blood ingestion were used to initially determine the knock-down (KD) effect in the first 30 minutes followed by the mortality rate and the time to 50% mortality (TD50) up to 72 hours. Ten bioassays were performed from a single initial treatment over the course of 27 months.
A greater effect was confirmed when the surface was more porous and at a double concentration. Each formulation exhibited differences in effect intensities on KD or TD50 but showed greater effectiveness when the formulation contained PY.
Implications for vector control are discussed based on studies on different formulations of microencapsulated insecticides on different surfaces and concentrations in laboratory and field bioassays.
