ABSTRACT There are many orthopaedic pioneers whose impact continues to live on today, teaching us valuable lessons, inspiring us to greatness, and touching the lives of generations of future patients. Professor Ilizarov, a nonsurgically trained general practitioner, represents such an important orthopaedic forefather for his instruction on how to grow bones and soft tissues that would otherwise face catastrophic deformity and dysfunction.
