Abstract

This study explored the experiences of undergraduate social work students who had faced the death of a client in their senior field placements. Using qualitative and quantitative data collected by survey, the study examined how the incidents of client death affected these students and how personnel in their practicum settings and university programs assisted them in coping with and processing these incidents. Results indicated that whereas students coped with the clients' deaths relatively well, their perception of support and assistance provided in their field sites and academic programs was mixed. The article concludes with recommendations for helping students cope with client death and implications for future research.
