Abstract
An unresponsive 27-month-old black girl was brought to the Johns Hopkins pediatric emergency room. For the prior 45 to 50 minutes, she had been the middle passenger in the backseat of a car that had been traveling from Washington, DC, to Baltimore. The car was described as "an old heap of junk" by an adult passenger who also reported that the car's heater was turned on with all of the windows closed except for the ajar driver's window, throughout the trip. The two other children in the backseat reported that the patient had repeatedly climbed down to the floor and back up to the seat during the trip; about 15 minutes before arrival, she had fallen asleep.
