Abstract
Fingernail changes such as spooning, clubbing, banding, and streaking are useful observations in the diagnosis of a variety of clinical disorders.1 Recently, more careful analysis of these epidermal structures has revealed changes in composition concurrent with such disorders as cystic fibrosis2 and renal failure.3 These findings, demonstrating the value of altered nail composition in the diagnosis of certain metabolic disorders, have prompted our interest in the potential usefulness of "nail biopsies" in neonatal anabolic disorders. This preliminary report confirms that samples of satisfactory size may be collected within days of birth and provides nail nitrogen values for the normal neonate.
