Abstract
I have read the article by Nelson and Ellenberg (Pediatrics 61:20, 1978) on febrile convulsions with considerable interest and cannot agree with Dr J.W. Freeman (Pediatrics 61:806, 1978) that they show "these children do well—even without therapy." Nelson and Ellenberg's study did not record prophylaxis with anticonvulsants, and they are therefore not able to know whether those children who were at greatest risk of further seizures had them prevented.
In their initial report, Nelson and Ellenberg1 found that 22% of the whole group of 1,706 children were neurologically suspect or abnormal prior to their first fit, but they do not say how many of the children who did not have convulsions were considered other than normal at comparable ages.
