Abstract
Sixteen pediatric patients developed 18 episodes of transient postoperative hypertension after operations on the urogenital system. Fifteen of the 16 patients had hydronephrosis. The onset of hypertension was from 1 to 9 days after the operation. The mean duration was 3.8 days. This transient type of postoperative hypertension usually resolved without anti-hypertensive therapy. Control studies showed that patients undergoing operations for non-urologic disorders also developed transient postoperative hypertension but of much shorter duration. Possible mechanisms and causes for this reaction are discussed.
