Abstract
Thrombocytopenia without other demonstrable disease has been recognized in 14 newborn infants of seven families at the University of Minnesota Hospitals. The majority of infants were born to mothers with chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura in states of activity, spontaneous remission, and post-splenectomy remission. All infants recovered without apparent sequellae. While a serious mortality is given in earlier reports, our experience and the literature of recent years indicate that this is usually a benign entity that requires no more vigorous management than careful, expectant observation.
