Abstract
Racism in all forms, including racial discrimination, historical racism, structural oppression, and institutional discrimination, has well-documented adverse effects on the mental health of children and adolescents. It is associated with suicidal ideation, depression, anxiety, substance misuse, and behavioral issues. In this chapter, we detail the effects of racism on the mental health of youth of color from birth to 25 years of age and provide recommendations for pediatric health professionals and collaborators to mitigate the adverse influence of racism on youth mental health.
