Abstract
The term opportunity youth references young people between 16 and 24 years who are neither enrolled in school nor participating in the labor force. They are among the most challenging youth to serve for pediatric health professionals, as they live and operate outside the boundaries of the usual social structures meant to protect them. This chapter explores how to meet the needs of opportunity youth, focusing on equity concerns that often disadvantage Black, Indigenous, and People of Color; institutional systems that contribute to youth becoming disconnected; and opportunities for the health care system to engage with opportunity youth.
