Abstract
The author presents her book as "the story of life in a poor quarter of Cairo as it is experienced by the poor themselves". It relates the experience of one who took part in the daily activities of those she studied, learned to think as they did and to experience the conditions under which they lived. It is the method of the social anthropologist, often called "participantobservation. "
