Abstract
In this article, I argue that in the short fiction film dichotomy of classical vs. art film, the basic strategy of the latter is to work against how we as viewers are conditioned to respond, by challenging our passivity with an array of narrative and aesthetic devices – the reward being activation through strategies that involve ambiguity, dissonance and co-creation.
