Wellness Theory: A Discussion and Application to Clients with Disabilities

Abstract

The wellness process encompasses the biological, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects of person-in-environment functioning. The authors offer a definition of wellness and describe a practice perspective centered on wellness theory. Wellness theory is discussed and evaluated according to the Practitioner's Evaluative Framework proposed by Dixon and colleagues. Practice interventions are discussed in relation to working with people who have long-term disabilities or chronic medical problems. Implications for social work education and future research are presented.
