The Evaluation of Management Skills of School Administrators in the Context of Effective School

Abstract

There are some managerial skills, qualifications, and competencies that school administrators need to have in order to manage schools effectively. According to the most general classification, these skills are; technical, human, and organizational skills. The study aims to classify the management skills that school administrators should have in school effectiveness according to teachers' opinions and to reveal them with specific themes. The research is designed as a case study pattern. The study's participant group consists of 12 preschool, primary school, middle school, and high school teachers, selected through stratified sampling. The research data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using the content analysis technique. The management skills subject to the study were themed on school administrators' human, technical and organizational skills. The findings of the study revealed that the dimensions of justice, empathy, respect, communication skills, tolerance, and discipline in the context of human skills of school administrators; the dimensions of technological aptitude, instructional leadership, business management skills, knowledge of legislation, efficient use of resources and research and development in the context of technical skills of school administrators; adaptation to change, ensuring the participation of stakeholders in decision processes, crisis management, organizational communication, visionary leadership, creating a positive organizational climate, aptitude of teamwork and human resources management in the context of organizational skills of school administrators are at the forefront. As a result, it is recommended that current administrators take practical training in the sub-dimensions of three skill areas that can be developed for increasing school effectiveness and that more qualitative and quantitative research should be conducted in the field.
